Nickel Mountain Geology, Mining, and Remediation

Roseburg Public Library invites the community to join us for a live presentation on Nickel Mountain geology, mining operations and remediation efforts.

Program presenter Larry Broeker, a geologist with Umpqua National Forest from 1990 to 2008, will provide an in-depth look at Nickel Mountain, located four miles west of Riddle in Douglas County. Mining and smelting operations were conducted at the site by Hanna Nickel (1954-1987) and Glenbrook Nickel (1987-1998), and about 650 people were employed there in the 1960s and 1970s.

Broeker will cover several topics related to Nickel Mountain, including a geologic overview of the Klamath Mountains; a chronological history of mine activities; the formation of a nickel laterite deposit; bygone mining and smelting operations; and demolition and remediation efforts.

The program, which will be in the library’s Deer Creek Room, is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Roseburg Public Library staff at 541-492-7050 or library@cityofroseburg.org.
